Sharpen Sebenza S35VN and S45VN

Thank you! Yes there are lots of different systems out there and I will do my homework. Your personal experience with the Edge Pro and Sebenza's is very helpful. I just went to their website and saw two different kits: Apex and Professional. Which one do you use? Thank you!
I have the basic Apex system, and have added stones as I need them.

Thank you all for your advise and suggestions. I just ordered an Edge Pro Apex 4 based on what I've read here and also YouTube videos for the different systems and setups. I understand there's a learning curve and expect to spend some time practicing. I hope you're all enjoying the long Memorial Day weekend, as we remember the fallen soldiers and their families.

Congratulations, I have seen a lot of positive things written about the Edge Pro sharpening system. Let us know what you think about it after using it a bit.

I got the Edge Pro Apex 4 today! Tried it on an inexpensive knife that was already sharp. I used the included stones starting with 400 grit to set the angle, then worked my way through from 220 grit to the 3000 grit polishing tape. Finished with a leather strop. The edge looks pretty polished! And it slices through paper well. Had trouble matching the angle at the choil and didn't really figure it out yet.

I need to practice on more knives before trying one of my Sebenza's, but they're factory sharp now so I'm in no rush.

Thanks again for all your help!

P.S. Tried to get a picture of the polished edge but my iPhone (shooting through a magnifying loupe) just doesn't really show it well.

Question for Edge Pro users that have sharpened Small Sebenza Drop Point blades: Do you use the Small Knife Attachment? Or just the regular table and move the blade to get from sharpening choil to tip? Thank you!

On my Small Seb I use the small blade attachment, have the thumb stud tight (estimate the other side) and edge parallel. That does the job for me.

After sharpening lots of lots of kitchen knives and a few folders I tried sharpening a Small Sebenza with an S45VN blade. Straight out of the box, this blade didn't seem very sharp. I only tested on paper. Using my Edge Pro I began with the 400 grit stone and worked my way up to the 3000 polish tape. All of the stones and tape were just standard issue with the Edge Pro kit.

I now have a polished edge on the blade, but it seems barely sharper than before. Is it the S45VN or something else?

Any of you out there with the new CRK S45VN blades find them less sharp out of the box?

Thank you!

I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker for my CRK Mnandi and it works wonderfully so I really don't know whjy you had an issue with yours.
i had a Lansky at one time for a short while and I never did warm up to it. I ended up giving that away to a fellow coworker if I remember correctly.

I am a big fan of the Sharpmaker so I really can't help you when we talk about other guided systems. Sorry.

Thank you. I have the Sharpmaker as well. Maybe I’ll give that a try.

Work sharp guided, set @17* start coarse (320 dialmond) then 600 diamond) , strop with 2>.5 micron diamond spray on basswood or leather , should be insanely sharp with toothy edge

at worst sharpmaker with diamond rods, then strop green compound on cardboard if not diamond spray

Thank you! I may have a try with the Work sharp sometime. I also have a Sharpmaker but haven't tried diamond rods. With my Edge Pro I matched the factory angle as best I could and it was nowhere near 17 degrees. I think it was over 21 degrees. I'm planning to change the angle a little at a time each time I sharpen until I get closer to 18 degrees or so. Thanks again!

The edge pro is a a awesome system!
imo I would knock that factory edge off !! ( it could be burned) and re profile @ 20* or 18*

I totally agree with you. The knife sharpened on my Edge Pro is pictured above. I plan to use it and resharpen often, re-profiling it as I go. It could be the heat treat as you say too. Thanks!!
P.S. Thanks for posting the video.. it just showed up now. Didn't see it before.

It's possible to polish the sides of a blade yet miss the apex, which from what you've described sounds like has happened to you.

The Edgepro is a great system; I would go back to less expensive knives and practise until you (consistently) get the edge you want, and only then return to your prized possessions.

You can take steel off but you can't put it back on.

I agree! You cannot put steel back. Thank you.
