Sharpened first knives on KME Sharpener

KME rocks.

Definitely. I just reprofiled my QTR-5 hawkbill on mine the other night, using the JewelStik they sell for it. It's awesome for recurves, hawkbills, etc. Sure, you can sharpen these blade shapes on a round surface with sandpaper or on the edge of a bench stone, but the KME/JewelStik combo can't be beat for consistency and ease.

I've got the jewelstick for the recurves on a few of my ZT knives in s30v and it does an exceptional job.

My system shipped out today and I can hardly wait. I got the diamond kit and added an extra course along with the 1.5 and 4 micron emulsions. I've been using a lansky for awhile now with great results. Can cut a free hanging hair. But it's just a pain to have to reprofile every knife to match the preset bevel angles. Like everyone else said Ron is a great guy and I was surprised by his honesty and genuine desire to make the customer happy even if it means he does that make as much money. I couldn't afford the base and I knew I could make one fairly easy. Didn't want to mention that on the phone but I wanted to know if the case I get would fit the base. He said yeah and told me I could make one easy enough if I wanted with just a 1/2 dowel and some plywood. I was blown away. I remarked how that kind of thing is rare with a company anymore and he said "I'm not hear to suck every dime I can out of people." outstanding. Made a loyal customer out of me right then and there.

I had the good fortune to get to know Ron a little bit recently and I totally agree. He is a super nice guy, he helps and supports his customers 100%, and he is completely honest and straightforward. Not to mention he answers his own phone every weekday morning!

I think Ron could throw the baby out with the bath water, and start fresh. Having to remove the guide rod each time I rotate the blade, is a real nuisance.

Could you explain this problem a little more? I haven't notice this an issue in other reviews I've seen so.

Also, I think he would be better off making his system more modular rather than just making a ”better” version. A set of 3” jaws would make all the difference.

I have been eyeballing one of these for about a month now but not sure if I should get the water stones version or diamond stone version. Any suggestions?

I currently have and use the Sharpmaker and the DMT Aligner kit that has diamonds stones. I dont want something that is messing or will wear out too quick. I dont have alot of blades but might try to do some kitchen knives though too!

Also, did you guys that have this, did you get the stand? I kinda think 25 bucks for it is alittle high for what you get!

Thx.

Edited: corrected bad spelling on tablet... :)

I don't know why you would need to remove the guide rod each time you rotate the blade. You can rotate without having to remove the rod.

I got the stand, but agree $25 is a little high for what it is. I would't say it's very sturdy, though it is useful. See post 23 above.

How do you get around the 17 degree limit? I have some Spyderco's that are set at 15 degrees per side so how would I sharpen them without reprofiling to 17 degrees?

This is the main reason that is holding me back from getting one is that I mainly own Spyderco's.

Thx.

Remove the screw for the angle adjuster, put the spherical guide bearing on upside down, replace screw. Take 10 seconds. Just got my system today and did my first knife on it at 12.5 degrees per side. That was the lowest without hitting the clamp but it was a one inch wide blade. Of course with a wider blade you could go lower if you felt the need. Works great so far by the way. Diamomd stones reprofile like champs but I think I need the hard Arkansas or at least one of the Chosera like 2k before I go to Stropping because the diamonds are very aggressive.
