Unlike most posters, I DO want a "Sharpened Pry Bar." I'm looking for a fixed blade 4-6" or so, thick (1/4" at least), carbon steel. Suggestions from those of you who use such things? Two responses would help: under $150 street price (if such things exist) and over $150. Thanks for any help.

yeah ranger knives should fit the bill, i dunno you might wanna check out TOPS knives. possibly ontario. my luck with ranger knives have been not so good, i own 3 of them, 2 are not very sharp, the other had flaws and rust when i purchased it. if things like quliaty and out the bag. sharpness bother you then dont get a ranger knife, but if you dont mind those things then go for it.

Guys, appreciate the response. Becker hard to find (OOB, i think) but RK is probably gonna get the call.

Go for the ranger which clocks in under $150. I'd be hard pressed to break a DF even on one of my better days, but I'll bet they are tough to locate at the moment.

scrapyard knives, scrapper 6

Specs at a glance:

Steel: SR-77
Hardness: 58 - 60 Rc
Handle: Resiprene C
Thickness: .275 (Between 1/4" & 5/16")
Blade Length: 6.5"
Overall Length: 11.5"

but as far as availbility ranger is higher

jb beat me, if you want a pry bar that can also cut then check out scrapyard knife company. the S6 should be available in their shop. it is a no nonesense type of knife, functional to the bone and b**tugly.

beyond that you have the usual suspects: ranger, busse, swamp rat. check out the exchange here on bf. price vary because we are talking secondary market, their official offerings are usually gone in minutes, this means you will pay more than 150 for it.

Ummm, nothing is available from the company shop right now. You're stuck with the exchange or Evilbay if you want a SY blade right now. Incidentally, I'd take a Yard Guard or Yard Hook over an S6 for prying. DF is prolly best, but you aren't going to find one for $150.

Another vote for Ranger knives:thumbup:

I will second SYKs
Your not likely to break one.
When you pick one up it will become apparent why.

In the over $150.00 range you should look at a Fehrman Last Chance. Great blade steel, and reasonable price. Also, a Busse Natural Outlaw would be an excellent choice. There are also many custom makers that could make you something that wouldn't cost you an arm or a leg. Tom Krein, Scott Gossman, Gerry Drew and Bill Siegle come to mind.

Fehrman uses CPM 3V which while not a simple "carbon" steel, it's an excellent tool steel, great for knives with the right heat treat. Fehrman has the heat treat right.

I have used my Ranger RD-7 for some fairly serious prying of wood that was nailed together really well. I think my arm would break off before I could break the Ranger.

There are other super tough knives out there, but Rangers are readily available, can be made to order, and are an excellent value.

Plus Justin Gingrich is one of the nicest people in the knife world.

I don't think yo ucan go wrong with any recommendation listed. They are all stout little knives. I just bought two Scrapyard Keepers with 4.5 inch blade and about 1/4 inch thick. I wish I had bought two more. Great little knife.

I'm looking to buy a $15 Cold Steel True Flight Thrower, just to sate my curiosity as to how well it'll meet the "sharpened pry bar" spec.
1055 steel, 12" OAL, 5mm thick, ground so that at least I'll be able to put an edge on the thing. And the price is right.
