Sharpener for Whirlwind

I don't know what's best, Whirlwind, but I know they sharpen up quite easily on a Spyderco Sharpmaker.

Does the Sharpmaker use about the same angle as the one that came on the Whirlwind? I really like that angle.

BTW, I was thinking of a precision angle type sharpener.

Then you should get the EdgePro. None of the other guided sharpeners is as accurate. That being said, the Apex from EdgePro is not cheap. With most of the sharpeners, there is a certain unavoidable 'adaptation period' where the knives adapt to the sharpener's angle. In the case of Sharpmaker(204) it's 30 or 40 degree. Even Gatco, DMT Aligner and Lansky sets are not precise.

If you don't want to spend too much money on sharpeners, just get the basic tool (Sharpmaker, flat benchstone, Gatco or Lansky set, or a combination of any of these) and then try perfecting your sharpening skill with the tool(s) of your choice.

How much is the EdgePro or Apex or whatever you call it?

Thanks!

PS. Like my new sig? Could come in handy. 'Read my sig!' LOL.

Chang loves the Second Amendment. Too bad Algore doesn't like it anymore. He used to be very pro-gun. I hope Bush or Browne wins. Not sure who I dislike more though... Darth Nader (breaths heavily then says, "I sense a disturbing lack of faith in seat belts!" and grabs the automobile industry by the balls with his force powers) or Algore, who lies excessively and is prone to gross exaggeration.

Whirlwind,

The Apex is less expensive then the Pro, it was $125 for a basic setup last time I checked. Anyways... click here to go to EdgePro site.

You're right. It is expensive. How about those $30-$40 dollar clamp sharpeners with angle adjustment? I know there'd be some change, but other than that, how are they?

Know about anything cheaper than the Apex with precision angle stuff?

Thanks,

Whirlwind

Gatco or Lansky will work well. I had had a Lansky rig for a long time, and it worked just fine. Just forget about the angles stamped on the guide and do a magic marker trick, that is mark the edge and adjust the angle accordingly--that way you'll know whether you're working all the way to the edge or not. The set comes with coarse stones, so even if you need to reprofile your edge it won't take that long. Joe Talmadge's Sharpening FAQs is an excellent place to start if you want to compare other sharpening rigs. Click here to go there.

I heard good things about Skarb, but I don't have a direct experience with it. Try to do a search in General Knife Discussion forum.

O yea..., about anything else is cheaper than the Apex, but I doubt if anything is even close. But like I said somewhere, practice, practice, practice... Good luck.

Does either the Gatco or Lanskey have an infinate number of angles possible? I've seen some where there were like six different angles. No in-betweens. Thanks.

None of them does, that's why you have to adapt your blades to the one angle you think is best. So you have to reprofile some anyway. If you need to deviate much from the original angle (it's sometime prefered), the same rig but with diamond stones is desirable to cut down reprofiling time.
