my boss works at atk and sometimes thay have one of there 1000w high presure lamps go out and he changes them. inside the lamp there is a long ark tube about 12" long and 5/16" in di. he gave me one of these to day and holly hell its an amazing sharpener. the knife started with avery dull edge and this thing got it hair poping sharp in no time. its a white tube that is semi transparent and has a very fine smooth terture. what do you think

Sounds like a ceramic rod to me. Ceramic is used in a lot of high voltage applications for an insulator. So you've got a crock stick.

that rod is glass that has been blasted with fine grit to give it a frosted finish to diffuse the light. i have one in the shelf my monitor sits on to touch up my exacto knife after hitting it a few times on a ceramic rod.

i found a page that says its made from alumina crystail so it can handle the heat

I know guys using those bulbs on their bowfishing boats but use the 150-350 watt ones. If you want more of those I'm sure I can talk to my buddies about it but if they find out what I am getting them for they will probably keep them for themselves. :D

It's some sort of ceramic (aluminum oxide) or quartz (pure silicon) that holds up to 6000 °K
No wonder it's a good sharpener. Don't drop it, though.

I have one that I glued a rod to and use it with my Lansky set up sometimes. Yes, they will sharpen.

My shop has electricians and we have a deal where if they bring me one of those rods when they have to replace a bulb, I'll sharpen their knives with it. Works well for me.

yeah my dad's buddy showed us that probably ten years ago although I haven't come across any in a while put a super smooth edge almost polishes the edge
