Does anybody take any sharpeners with them while they go camping, if you do which ones??????

Of course! I tend to like ceramic or diamond hones in the outdoors, since I don't have to bring oil for them.

I stole a cue from Riley/Siguy and made a mini-kit out of an altoids tin. Just glued a piece of leather to one side (as a strop) and a piece of mouse pad to the other side. Carry your sandpaper grits inside the tin. Works quite well.

But I also don't have any blades with super-precise edge angles or anything, nothing that's like 'exactly 19.4 degrees' or something. I only sharpen using things that would work as well as field tools.

a little arkansas stone, some abrasive-loaded leather and an e-z lap diamond rod can put a great edge on just about anything IMO.

I pack a Spyderco double-sided (coarse / fine) ceramic stone, in a small leather pouch. It's great for touch-ups, plus there's just something special about sitting around the fire at night, sharpening your knife.

All the best,

- Mike

Lately I have been keeping a little Fallkniven DC-4 combo stone in my pack. One side of the DC-4 is fine diamond, the other is ceramic. I have a little piece of leather that fits over the stone to use as a strop. Very rarely do I actually need to sharpen (remove metal) in the field but firmly believe in maintaining by stropping or some light passes on the ceramic.

+1, the little Spyderco sharpeners are very nice.

I have a habit of always carrying a four-inch ceramic rod in the cargo pocket of my shorts. I'm thinking I'm gonna have to break down and make strop for the convex blades one of these days.

Car camping I take a lot because my sisters in law always bring knives that are duller than butter knives. X-coarse, coarse DMT diafolds for reprofiling, fine and X-fine DMT stones, strops.

Backpacking I will often take a two-sided strop. Rough side with black BR compound, smooth side with green compound.

I often carry a piece of leather that just fits in my shirt pocket with a piece of 800 grit sandpaper glued on with adhesive spray glue.

I carry 2 stones and a square of thick leather with green compound.... The stones are a two sided 220/800 and a 6000....

Here is a pic of a "Utilipouch" from one of my Bush Kits...

i pack a double sided stone, one coarse and one fine.

i also pack a sheet or two of 600 grit and 1500 grit sand paper.

I have a V-type sharpener made in Rockwell, N.C. It works okay, especially for softter, predominately carbon steels that already have a decent edge. Case in point- it restored the hair-whittling edge to my Soddie Jr. right quick. Same with my Mora.
I also have a Case Small Arkansas stone, but I can't freehand worth a darn.

i have gone through a few different things, and carry different sharpeners depending on my mood.

for a list of several of them along with some blurry photos, go here.

i currently carry a two sided strop with coarse and fine compound. the leather straps are about 6".

Really only take a norton stone, and a gerber Diamond rod, does everything I need.

Old school :D
