Sharpening 101..?

Read the stickies in this M T & E subforum, especially the one started by Magnanimous.

Next is the store selection. If you decide to go with Sharpmaker, get also the diamond or CBN stone (either one will do). Not all stone can work for S30V, as indicated by David.

When buying knives for practice, I'd suggest not too cheap, the steel might give frustrating result. I'd suggest Victorinox paring knife. It's not hard to sharpen and you'll learn better as it can get really sharp. And you'll get good use of the knife too.
Good luck!

I'd like to second David and Chris. My favourite combo, particularly for S30V with it's vanadium carbides, is a good quality Crystolon stone from Norton (to be used with oil) or a good Diamond stone (DMT - the 6 inch diamond whetstones are my favourite, light and easy to hold without a base, or 400/1000 grit diamond combo stone from Chefknivestogo - incredible deal although I have not tried this one myself) together with the Spyderco Sharpmaker + the diamond or CBN rods.

This can tackle any steel, the bench stones can reprofile your knife and the Sharpmaker can keep it as sharp as you ever need it.

I would suggest a DMT stone and a Sharpie to help set the edge and the Sharpmaker for the majority of what you need and touch ups. Good luck!
