Sharpening a false edge?

Will sharpening a false edge destroy the effects of prior heat treatment? Does is depend on the steel? The two that I am thinking about doing are D2 and 154CM. Would doing it real SLOW be the way to go? If I do it, I would use a Ken Onion WorkSharp. The knives are mid-range production models. Thanks for any advice.

You shouldn't have a problem with ruining the HT. Unless you are really doing some heavy removal near the tip, you should be fine. Just go no further than warm to the touch, and dunk in water often.

aliexpress has affordable diamond sharpeners. I don't know about the quality but my guess is that you should at least get a few sharpened false edges out ouf them.
Start with as coarse as you can get. App 120 gritt then ~240 ~400 ~800 and strop

Every knife I've ever made has had it's first edge put on with the belt grinder. I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you get it hot enough to change color there shouldn't be an issue. Knives have the entire bevels ground after heat treat quite often.

In my finish grinding I get the false edge thin and close to sharp. During my hand sanding/finishing the edge naturally comes down to sharp. By the time I'm done hand finishing all the edge needs is stropping.

Just a thouht: If you sharpen the false edge, you have esentially made the knife into a dagger. You might want to check the local laws to see if it is still legal to carry.
