Sharpening a machete for the first time. What do I need?

For files, the following are good brands:

Pferd
Grobet
Simonds
F. Dick

For frequent machete use I definitely don't think a HF 1x30 is overkill at all. Dings are one of the most frequent forms of edge damage with machetes and a belt sander really speeds up the repair process. Take it down to about 15° per side.

Hey, Krow. I do all my machetes on a Harbor Freight 1x30. I start with an 80 grit, then 220, then a worn 600 grit. I did have a leather stropping belt to get the last of the bur off, but I misplaced it. I find that just flipping the 600 grit inside out and using the cloth backing does okay at finishing the edge, though.

Got the sander today and the box looks ripped in half and taped back together, gaps with styrofoam visible. I haven't opened it myself and contacted HF hoping to get a replacement shipped out.
