Sharpening a Microtech voids it's warranty?

I guess it would depend how they come from the factory. A couple dozen strokes on a ceramic at a slightly steeper angle starts putting a micro bevel that is easy to spot in the right light. And stropping will start to polish the bevel after a few sessions.

A knife is meant to be sharp and they get dull with use. It is insane for a knife company to expect their customers to not sharpen their knives and will void the warranty doing so. They might as well not have a warranty.

What a joke.

Its like a gun manufacturer having you send the weapon in to be reloaded :D

Procedure for sharpening my Ultratech:
1. Go to my local dealer to have them send the knife to microtech because I'm not LEO or MIL.
2. Wait 3 months
3. Return to the dealer to pick up the microtech.
4. Use knife forbone week, then start over at step 1.

Seem like this came up a long time ago. MTs haven't been worth taking a risk on forever so this means very little to me..

(I must have seen it on the FB Knife Gods group last year, for those unafraid to go there they also talked about it on Cliff Stamps website.. :) )

They'd be able to tell by it having less than a 80 degree inclusive edge bevel... I may be over exaggerating their edge bevels.

No, that sounds about right to me. For the DE blades anyway.

What if I claim that I rubbed the blade against a stone, but it came away duller than when I started? I did not sharpen the knife in that case, so it should still be covered by warranty.

I find that many written warranties are typed in a way to protect the company against serious mental defectives who think they can grind a blade to a stump and send it in because of the "lifetime" warranty. Often times they will cover things even if the warranty says the opposite. But in this case who knows.

WOW..... I wouldn't believe it if I didn't read it for myself... Well scratch microtech from the future purchase list... WOW SIMPLY WOW...

Aye, but their warranty service was already awful at best. Adding in the question of whether or not it'll be covered at all due to basic knife maintenance is just ridiculous.

It's Mikrotek, how is this any surprise???

Like we needed another reason to NOT support the thief Marfony!!! :p (See what I did there? :D)

Yes, this has been around for a while...

Also true. Benchmade is a classic example. They use more harsh restrictions in their warranty than they actually cover. But with MT, I would say it is a much bigger risk. Not one I'm willing to take. I don't know if their warranty department has improved but years ago when this sharpening issue was a hot topic they were taking forever to service knives so this was a huge concern. There are threads in the GB&U about it. If MT was on my radar I might go look for those threads again but I just don't give a crap as I wrote them off a long time ago for just these reasons...

I had to send mine back for service, and they did a good job sharpening it. Took around 6 weeks all in for service and sharpening.

Tony is notorious for openly stealing IP and designs. Won't get a shiny dime from me for as long as I collect knives....

Good point!
I'll use Benchmade as an example. They have done free warranty work on knives with custom scales for me. They've done the same when I was the third owner of a knife. They also go above and beyond. For example.....if I send a knife in for sharpening or blade swap they will replace all the hardware.....without asking for it.
I usually call before I send a knife in. I find you get better service when you speak with someone.
I have gotten great service from Pro Tech, BM, Spydie and ZT. I have only gotten horrible service one time.......and it was Microtech.....absolutely effing HORRIBLE.
Took almost 4 months and came back scratched to shit with an off centered blade......on a brand new knife. I tried contacting them, e Mail & phone calls, with no success. I bought the knife at Blade HQ. Called them and they were nice enough to send it in for me.
Horrible customer service.......the subject of this thread does not surprise me at all.

Makes sense. You never see a pic of one that's been used. Safe queens.

Wow. That sucks. Luckily I only got a fixed blade from them (Microtech SBK). I won't be buying any more of their products. What a shame especially since I do like the one product I have from them.

Other than the two separate instances under their website that clarify this particular issue and specifically say IMPROPER BLADE SHARPENING IE: "If you mess up the pretty double edge it is not our problem"

http://www.microtechknives.com/support/our-warranty/

http://www.microtechknives.com/knives/knife-care/

I have sent in no less than 3 Microtechs for service with mirror polished re-profiled edges with a note included telling them not to mess with the edge and I have never once had an issue. Once again everyone is jumping on the proverbial bandwagon kinda like when someone mentions Mick Strider or Strider Knives.
