Sharpening a Sebenza

A small Sebenza has been my carry knife now for two weeks and I like it well enough to have ordered a large Sebenza which I hope to get this week.

In general, my use for a knife requires a very sharp edge more so than a tough edge. While my small Sebenza came sharp, it wasn't "scary sharp". In fact, the Camillus EDC in 154 CM that I have came from the factory much sharper than the Sebenza.

How do all you experienced Sebenzanistas sharpen your Sebenza's and what techniques do you use to get one scary sharp?

I use a spyderco 204 sharpmaker at the 40 degree setting (not the back bevel). Since I don't ever let the blade get dull, using the fine stones has always been fine. I start out by using the pointy end of the ceramics and give it 10 strokes (straight down motion) on each side alternating from left to right with each stroke. Test for sharpness and then repeat.

The most that I have had to do is repeat it 2 times and my small was scary sharp. If you have a BG-42 version, it should sharpen up fairly easy. That has always worked for me. Nothing fancy, just sharp.

If you want to, you can always send it back to Chris' shop, tell them it wasn't sharp enough and they will take care of it.

I know a number of folks that use Arkansas stones, but I swear by my Sharpmaker. I sharpen everything I own with it when it needs it no mater what the steel type without a problem. It works!!

Thanks.

I also use the Sharpmaker 204 on the 40 degree setting. It takes very little effort with the Sharpmaker, and a leather strop w/flitz. Just a couple of minutes every Sunday night to keep it SCARY sharp.

Any hints on how to keep the convex grind?

i agree with the guys above....my small seb which is my edc was scary sharp and it only takes a few licks on a sharpmaker with the 40 degree setting with the white stones to bring the edge back to scary sharpness.....even the ever wary and know it all guys at the cigar shop where i chew the fat were impressed with the sharpmakers's ability to easily bring an edge back to scary sharpness on not only on the sebs but on all knives....the new sharpmakers come with a booklet and a video explaining how to use it...its a worthwhile investment as are reeve knives.....feverdoc

Sharpmaker at 40 degrees included, and a strop.
Mine didn't come "scary sharp" either, but a few passes on the flats of the white stones got it there.
