Sharpening a Shatt

I have a three bladed swell center shatt and morgan whittler I got a while back from a friend and I can't seem to get a good edge on the main blade. The smaller pen and coping blades got shaving sharp but I am struggling with the main blade. With all my knives I use a pair of crock stick that have coarse and fine stones and use it for all things from case stainless to s30v and have never had a problem except from some really crappy knives. Anything I am doing wrong? I know Shatt is like one of the very best brands and I am very disappointed that I can't get it sharp enough, the rest of the knife is fine though. Any suggestions?

Is it the smooth bone one from the latest series? If so,I have one,I reprofiled the edge by hand,I made the angle steeper, brought the bevel of the edge higher up on the blade It seemed thick at the edge,It is sharp now.I used Arkansas stones
Funny thing, even though I do not carry it,I mostly carry a custom slipjoint,I still had to do that,to the blade I could not stand the way it came from them

Check the edge with a mag glass. Your crock sticks are probably just hitting the shoulders of the edge bevel. Some Queens and S&M's have been known to come with very obtuse edge bevels.

Better yet take a Sharpie and mark the cutting edge, drag it across your sticks and see where you are removing material. My bet is like the others, you aren't working on the edge, but behind it.

I used the same whet stones for years for all sharpening needs, then I bought a Queen Whittler and couldn't sharpen it no matter how hard I tried. I ended up at W-mart and bought a $15.00 diamond stone course on one side fine on the other. The diamond stones made the job much easier to thin out the edges to shaving sharp.

I will try the marker first, didn't think the angle would be to wide. I will re profile with diamond if that is the case. thanks

Ok I tried the market thing and yes it is indeed wider than my crock sticks. I tried the free hand sharpening (which ever since I got sticks has since gone down hill) and I was not getting the results I wanted, I was rather making a mess. I need to learn how to get back to basics with my free hand, like my new found love for traditions I need to get back to basics. I did however solve my dilemma. I used a 10-second from smiths and used it (I use this for my cheap knives that the steel is like that they use in butter knives) and after re-profiling the edge if you will I hit it with the crocks again and viola! It now shaves hair and is way sharper than it was before. If I am going to stick with crocks I think I need to invest in a system that allows it to be set to different angles to avoid having to repeat this procedure.

if shatt was queen d2 you might as well get a set of dmt diamonds. i've bought 6 queens in 5 wks. all dull as a brick.[ d2] most gecs & queens need a rebevel from factory. even if shaving when new the factory bevel wo'nt hold long.once a decent bevel is obtained ,crock sticks will keep you sharp for a long time.

Thats a great idea.
Morrow, I have to read that link when I get some time. My mooremaker stockman is giving me a hard time.

So-Lo put a beautiful edge on his sowbelly S&M.

doesn't get much sweeter than that.

Thanks for the kind words :)

ColonialKnifeFan, glad you got her sharp. What was it doing? Flip flopping burr? If it was just not getting "sharp," I can tell you SM's 420HC has a crazy heat treat put on it, it acts a lot like ATS-34. Their ATS-34 I have never played with, so I'm not sure about their HT on that. What's the steel on your knife?

That marker trick should help a lot, if you was not reaching the edge. That 420HC is harder than I thought... But diamonds whipped her into shape! :D Then it was just a polishing job after that.

Well I don't know if it's 420 or what, maybe you folks can help me out. On the small pen blade it says 043 and 176 and says it's made in 2000. Here is a pic for identification:

I don't think it was flip flopping a burr but rather the edge was not the right angle as my sharpener is set at. Mine sharpener unlike a sharpmaker does not have adjustable angles. It was just hitting the outside of the edge rather than the edge itself.

In 2000 Queen made a swell center in their Annual Reproduction Series. It has an ATS-34 main blade and 420HC secondary blades. If the etch on your main says 1 of 600 that is what you have.
