Does anyone know of a good guide to beginners hand sharpening, all i have is a whetstone. (planing on getting a sharpening system just haven't yet) My edc is dull enough its more a show piece at this point.

I have tried and looked at guides before but i cant seem to put a good enough (shaving) edge on it.

Just looking for tips and tricks

Go to the Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment sub forum and do some reading, then ask there. You will get lots of good information, and a fair amount of bickering between those of us that will not agree on which setup you ought to be trying;)

Seriously, there is probably no right answer that anyone can give you, but there may well be a best answer for you...that you will have to decide on your own after reading/researching many of the offerings on the market (for guided sharpening systems). Using your existing stone is going to be the least expensive approach assuming that it is the right tool for the job you are attempting...but you may need to develop some skill and that takes practice.

Have fun in your search, and if you get any specific questions, feel free to PM me and I will give you my advice and preferences (that may or may not work well for you).

Here is that sub forum I was recommending:

you could always just get some wet dry sandpaper and an old mouse pad and convex it. pretty much the easiest way to sharpen something cheaply.

there are many video's on youtube that will explain it better than i can. basically you just strop the edge on the sandpaper...stroping is pulling the blade away where sharpening you push the edge toward the stone. anyway you start with something like 320 grit and work your way up to finner grits until you are pleased with the edge. You can put a nice polish very sharp edge that way with minimal effort and its pretty hard to screw up.

the slight bit of give that a mouse pad has give you the convex edge, so it rounds the shoulder of the grind.
