Sharpening an AK47

Then you will want the HF grinder and a set of belts and the leather belt strop from Lee Valley. Practice on some garden tools and cheap knives. it's not really that hard. You can find more info in the Maintenance sub-forum.

I've been seriously considering getting some machinery to sharp with. I have less and less time these days. Sharpening used to be kind of therapy as I enjoy it... much like cleaning my guns... but I find as I get older I just don't have the time anymore and I wind up with dirty guns and dull knives LOL. The only thing that has kept me from taking the plunge is a lack of info and the fear of not being able to do it. Tell me... where can I find a complete idots guide to sharpening via a belt grinder... including how to set one up, all the terms, specs, and overall useful info? I have no idea where to start. I don't even know what harbor freight is or where to buy them. I have no idea what is a good speed to sharpen at, or even if you should have the belt moving away from the edge or towards it. I would imagine away from it so that it doesn't cut the belt... kinda like a strop. If you would be so kind as to help a brother out LOL.

Is this a good one to get http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=34951

I have one of those. I have put a few very sharp edges on some of my knives with that one, but so far have not used it for any of my Busse knives. I only have one left to convex, all the rest done by hand with sand paper/strop treatment. I am sorely tempted to try it on my FBMLE which is part way done with hand convexing, but would hate to round the tip on that one.

Hi EVerybody,

I have used the little belt sanders, but I to used to round the tips.

I bought a 2500.00 knife sharpener (joke, it is really a knife making grinder)from KMG with a variable speed motor.

With the variable speed you can keep the tips !!!!

Variable speed is the key.

I will post a pic of my sharpening my AK soon, I just have to go chop something so I have an excuse.................hmmmmmmmmmmmm :D

Is that easy to do... see that scares the crap out of me. You can get wheel grinders in variable speed for not an extreme amount of cash... that's why I was gonna go with rag wheels and different grades of compund... I've also seen leather wheels as well.

Good point Dave. Variable speed would both keep the heat at least lower and make it harder to round the tips.
