I just touched up the edge of my Vanguard with the Buckcote surface. I used felt pen on the exposed stainless steel and eventually hit on the proper sharpening angle (more obtuse than I expected). If I held the back edge of the knife too high off the stone I could feel it bite into the stone surface. It was less obvious if I had the blade too near horizontal. After a little stone work I stropped it with green buffing compound. It now shaves left-to-right, but not right to left. I'm satisfied with the result.
Question: Do you hold your edge sharpening angle consistently such that you could tell a customer how to tip the edge. For example could you say something like: "For a Vanguard hold the back edge of the blade 1/2" off the surface of the stone." Of course you would give other tips for tuning that position, but it would help to have a close starting point.
Any other tips would also be appreciated.
