Hey,

I'm acquiring quite a collection of carbide spade and twist bits that have eventually (or immediatly) chipped themselves into uselessness. Anybody know how to rejuvenate them? Come to think about it, what's the best system to sharpen drill bits in general?

T.J...
i was taught to sharpen all my bits by hand on a smooth wheeled bench grinder, good as new when i`m done with them.I worked in a farm machinery plant and we sharpened hundreds of bits a day and found we could do a better and faster job by hand, rather than with the machine......except on really big bits...3/4 inch ind bigger!!
takes a bit of practice though..good luck!!

on the spade bits you could sharpen by hand using a diamond stone. you should be careful when working with carbide not to go too fast, and use alot of cutting fluid.

to do it right you need a tool and cutter grinder and a diamond wheel, which i happen to have....i will trade you some koa for all your old carbide spade bits...if they are not too trashed. yes you can do it with a diamond hone...but you have to end up with both sides exactly symmetric or the drill will not center....will only cut on one spade, and will make a hole bigger than the bit. thats why you need to do it in a tool and cutter grinder with a fixture...grinds both sides in the exact same spot.
