Sharpening choil

Is the lack of a sharpening choil on a prospective knife a dealbreaker? I just bought a knife I otherwise love, that lacks a sharpening choil. It bothers me a bit. It is a Spartan Harsey.

Same boat, same knife. The lack of choil is the only small nit I have with the SHF; I have sharpened mine a few times however and it wasn't too difficult to do - and no "smile" added. I defer to Mr Harsey and his design as to why he didn't include one; it could be just as simple as a lack of a snag point.

I like the look of the mod done by Kmikaz3 in this thread however, very nice!

It looks a lot more professional too lol. Not to critique what Bill Harsey intended but i like mine with choil lol
Yea I hear ya. That's the one thing I didn't like about the SHF when I first saw it. I wish he would have added a sharpening choil.

Has anybody mentioned finger choils yet?

I add finger choils to some of my (bigger) knives as well.

A sharpening choil is a deal breaker for me (have passed on a number of knives with such).
Some of us choose alternate realities.
It seemed this thread was lacking perspective ;-)

This thread is 3 years old now. Sorry for the necro post, but I think it is still relevant!

So 3 years later, do you guys think the lack of a sharpening choil on an SHF is a deal breaker or does it really matter? I am expecting a new SHF in the mail today and I am on the fence about adding a choil or leaving it the way Mr. Harsey designed it! I guess It doesn't really matter to me but then I saw the pic from page 1 and it really looks good with an added choil! So what do you think?
Can always add on yourself

I like them when it comes to sharpening but I dont like them on cutting tasks. as a random but actual example..... cutting a pineapple leaf the sharpening choil gets caught and stops a clean cut. ends up being bit torn which involves another more careful cut. not a big deal if you have one plant to trim out of the way, but if you a 50 of them it becomes a huge headache and time waster. so task like that I grab a non choil or finger groove knife.

so I'd leave it and see if it actual bothers you on sharpening, and then you'll know what to do. I left mine as is.....

Good points! I honestly don't plan on using it enough to mandate multiple sharpenings...I think I'm looking at it from more of an aesthetics view.

scorpnsnake scorpnsnake Thanks bro. It works out really well. I try to use a zip tie on every knife that I sharpen with a jig system. It really makes the heel of the edge clean. Even if there is a sharpening choil, the zip tie makes a hard but sacrificial barrier where you can not worry about hitting the scale with your stone and can just go ham without being so careful. 👌

I hate choils of any kind except on fixed blades over 5” blade length. Choking up on a longer blade is useful. It’s not useful on a shorter blade and wastes one of the most used areas of the edge. I like being able to cut stuff right up against my grip on that handle.

It’s easy enough to sharpen a blade right up to where the edge terminates. Choils snag on shit you’re cutting and I hate that. Finger choils on shorter blades are as useful as tits on a bull. Snag city and takes away that crucial section of cutting edge on a smaller fixed blade.

Not always trivial to add a sharpening choil :)

What the hell is that? Looks like a 1/4” thick blade on that Spydie. And like 1/8” liners.
