Is the lack of a sharpening choil on a prospective knife a dealbreaker? I just bought a knife I otherwise love, that lacks a sharpening choil. It bothers me a bit. It is a Spartan Harsey.
Yea I hear ya. That's the one thing I didn't like about the SHF when I first saw it. I wish he would have added a sharpening choil. It looks a lot more professional too lol. Not to critique what Bill Harsey intended but i like mine with choil lol
Has anybody mentioned finger choils yet?
..... yep I do however like a finger choil on my medium to large blades. The lack is not a deal breaker for me, although I prefer them.
Can always add on yourself

I like them when it comes to sharpening but I dont like them on cutting tasks. as a random but actual example..... cutting a pineapple leaf the sharpening choil gets caught and stops a clean cut. ends up being bit torn which involves another more careful cut. not a big deal if you have one plant to trim out of the way, but if you a 50 of them it becomes a huge headache and time waster. so task like that I grab a non choil or finger groove knife. This thread is 3 years old now. Sorry for the necro post, but I think it is still relevant!
So 3 years later, do you guys think the lack of a sharpening choil on an SHF is a deal breaker or does it really matter? I am expecting a new SHF in the mail today and I am on the fence about adding a choil or leaving it the way Mr. Harsey designed it! I guess It doesn't really matter to me but then I saw the pic from page 1 and it really looks good with an added choil! So what do you think?
Good points! I honestly don't plan on using it enough to mandate multiple sharpenings...I think I'm looking at it from more of an aesthetics view.I like them when it comes to sharpening but I dont like them on cutting tasks. as a random but actual example..... cutting a pineapple leaf the sharpening choil gets caught and stops a clean cut. ends up being bit torn which involves another more careful cut. not a big deal if you have one plant to trim out of the way, but if you a 50 of them it becomes a huge headache and time waster. so task like that I grab a non choil or finger groove knife.
so I'd leave it and see if it actual bothers you on sharpening, and then you'll know what to do. I left mine as is.....
What the hell is that? Looks like a 1/4” thick blade on that Spydie. And like 1/8” liners.
