Sharpening choils are a psyop.

Without a sharpening choil, you get an area (right by the stress riser on this Manix original) and is difficult to sharpen without leaving some kind of unsharpened area and/or scrapes on the ricasso.

If you look at this Benchmade Skirmish and Spyderco Manix 1, I don't see how you'd think the Skirmish would be most likely to hang up.

Problem is you have one Huge choil. ;)
Look like the bevel should be brought back 3/4"?

Take a small diamond file and put a radius on your choil, that way material that falls into the choil area will ride up and onto the blade, much like I did with this benchmade Tri-age folder

Great move. People can't take the anti-choil heat! haha. I like everything above my handle sharp, if its on the blade and its not sharp, I don't like it. I want the blade to be sharp with no engineered dull areas. The spine? sure! Meant to be dull. But keep dull stuff off my business side lol!

Believe it or not, but some people sharpen their sharpening choils.

True, but to my way of thinking, unnecessary. They make a "single serration" out of it. But all you need to do is, as the handsome fella said:

put a radius on your choil

I’ve never understood the need to plunge the entire blade into something to cut it. Of all the animals I’ve processed, meat and vegetables I’ve cut along with all other knife related chores I’ve done over the last forty some odd years, I’ve never had an issue with a choil and I prefer knives with them.

The closer you can get your hand to the cutting edge, the greater the leverage, control and thus precision of your cuts. Hence I, too, share the knightly aspiration of:

just give me a spot for my finger on the handle

I had to pinch grip my dragonfly on the blade using that classic spyderco ricasso as a faux grip to artificially delete it when cutting stuff because it always got hung up lol. I almost sharpened it all the way out one day.

Looks more like a clearance cutout for the button lock mechanism.

They could design these things so that the handle comes right to the edge, and the clearance cut out is hidden inside the handle when open. I've seen it. That it's so rare is a shame.

I present to all, the world’s first perfect knife! All cutting edge, no choils, no icky handle of some terrible material to offend your senses. And look at that absolutely perfect blade to handle ratio! 100:0 😻 Available in all grinds. The one below is a scandi grind for the pro bushcrafters. The holes are only available on the signature model, of course.

Cut yourself? Man up and admit you were holding it wrong!

its right next to it, its the mate-up place for the stop index pin for closure. I can see the paint removed in big mouth billy right where it hits that stop pin when its closed. Good eye! Still wish it was sharp right to the handle. Gimme that low cutting "bore axis". The only choil i never really had an issue with was on the OG Slysz bowie, very mello choil, shallow and smooth transition into the cutting edge. Legendary, even though I could delete it there too and be happy.

Right, just move the handle forward some. If you do that, then the villagers from Handleratioburg will come and burn your barn down.

No! I don’t like the holes! Why does it have to have holes!
