I'd utilised many type of blades especially for farm and forestry works and I see how are utilised by professional workers (farmers, butchers, and so on). Every blade it's sharpen when is new (if required) and when suffer a damage.
It's lightly sharpen with special files (like the butchers do) or various types of stones during the use. The sort of sharpening item it's less important than the movements you do, that must be different from blade to blade, quickly and accurate (like caress the metal 5-6 times).
This can learn sharpening, sharpening, sharpening,...
I reccomend to learn looking professional workers and using some old blades of various designs.
The sharpen must be different even second the use of the blade.
If you sharpen the blade only when this don't cut no more you must consume too much metal.

I would add steeling to your list. Apperently thats what seperates the good butchers from the rest.

There are a few books that document to sharpen as well as our FAQ.
