My son amazes me every day.

He watched me once tuning up the BK-2 Thursday after use. I left the kit out and in a little while he was:

It is amazing what they learn by watching.

His blade is the child SAK - he likes the saw too.

My best friend.

He's got stomach flu today though. Keep us in your thoughts.

Thanks everyone!

Those are awesome pictures.

The second one looks like he's saying "Put the camera down and give me a hand here"

Thanks for sharing!

They sell a SAK that is designed to be a childs beginner knife. It has a cap lifter, saw, and blade. The blade is blunted/rounded. It could make a great bushcraft blade for kids, and adults. I might pick one up and give it a run.

That's it.

I got one for him after I saw it posted here and he loves it.

He tries to trade me his for my SAK Huntsman Plus all the time.

hope he feels better for christmas... you folks have a safe new year as well...:)

Cool, good thing to teach you children skills. I'll be starting that in the near-distant future w/ my daughter.

I'll just throw it out there. I used a SAK as a boy, it was one of my first knives. But I remeber cutting my hands bad one time. It is because the blade and handle geometory (<spelling?) is so symetrical, and I held it backwards in my hand. I didn't notice that the edge was turned around, the spine being so thin. Sliced my palm trying to close the knife when it wouldn't cut anymore (duh). Funny thing is, I didn't notice the cuts at first. Went inside, notice blood all over my pants, and starting crying in pain :D. My dad said I learned from the school of hard knocks.

Not saying you won't take cautions. Just sharing a story.

Thanks Mike! Happy Holidays to you and your family as well.

I appreciate that and you sharing your story.

Here's my grand daughter Charity teaching me the proper technique :)

Looks like we have 2 with like minds, she has the same knife and prefers the sharpmaker as well.

My 2 year-old also has a plastic SAK. He loves running the saw blade over different materials. He loves the feel.

I think the best thing about exposing young kids to learning skills is that they don't view it as work. They just see it as part of the process and try to mimic the adults. I really hope that my son learns to be self-reliant and in turn, more confident in himself because he'll actually be able to do things with his two hands.

Thanks for sharing the pics. Great stuff. I just hope your little fella is feeling better soon.

One last thing, I think Spyderco really hit the jackpot with their sharpmaker. It's a basic design that even relatively unskilled users can be successful with. MUCH easier than a benchstone, that's for sure.

Thanks everyone. I don't think getting him outside or interested in blades will be an issue. He's doing pretty well with learning about them so far - handle, blade, edge, sheath - and not to touch the blade and hold the handle.

He was thrilled to have that BK-2 in his hand the other day.

A little while later, after those pics, he picked the BK-2 up in the sheath and walked over to the Sharpmaker when I wasn't watching him directly and saw him over there. He wanted to sharpen it like I was earlier. It gave a good opportunity to talk about not handling anything unless Daddy says yes or lets him.

bladefrienzy - that is awesome. Glad to see some of the same things. I agree with you.

Thanks everyone in W&SS. He hasn't thrown up for about 12 hours now and is getting his personality back. Just tired now.

Now I'm waiting for it...I think I've washed and/or alcohol gelled my hands so many times I'm down 4 layers of skin. Mommy is sick now too.

Sorry to hear it bro, we went thought that last week, right in the middle of the new Gbaby being born. Luckily the daughter didn't get it. The little sweetie in the pics was pretty sick for a few days, but mamaw got her nursed back to health.
