Sharpening for idiots

From what it sounds like, The Spyderco Sharpmaker is a good system if you want to keep sharp knives sharp ? Is that an accurate assessment ? Would it even keep tougher steels sharp like M390 or S35VN?

With the basic Sharpmaker, this is basically true. You can repair really dull knives but it's going to take....."a while". I've used it with S35VN and it's does fine. Haven't tried M390 on it yet.

Now, if you add the diamond rods, this opens up the ability to sharpen much duller blades that need a lot of work and will handle harder steels much better.

That being said, I much prefer to sharpen really dull knives by hand. It's just much quicker. Once I have them in good shape, I will use my Sharpmaker to keep them sharp but I still tend to freehand more often. I have the Spyderco Medium and Fine bench stones and it's just quicker to pull them out and do a quick touch ups. I'm pretty sure the Bench stones and Sharpmaker rods are the same stone materials. I might be wrong on this though.

I just picked up a basic Spyderco Sharpmaker. I got a discount on it so I decided I might as well get it. Keeping sharp knives sharp I think is a good start.
