To just find your angle using the sharpie you should use a fine stone. It'll remove the sharpie without removing much steel, allowing you to determine the angle.

Yea that should be fine for the intended purpose.once you find your angle you can go to the lower grits to actually sharpen it.

I know this is an older thread but I still want to put in my 2 cents worth regarding the sharpening of knives . The WorkSharps and simular type sharpening systems are great for ESTABLISHING beveled ( grind angles ) on knives but can do more harm than good when used to MAINTAIN sharpness . Sharpening knives is not the " ROCKET SCIENCE " that some would have you believe . It does not require a lot of downward pressure to MAINTAIN an edge but rather lighter strokes on one side and then the other and then FINISHING with a strop to get that razor edge . Learn to sharpen by hand because you can't take a Worksharp along when you go to the wilderness !
