heres the question..im on a sharpmaker..my bevel is very small when I get done..its sharp..but the bevel looks way smaller than I think it should be.....for example if I reprofile on my smiths system there is a nice bevel...then I take it to me sharpmaker and im not hitting much of that bevel, only near the edge....im a beginner so im not sure if this is normal..right or wrong

What angles are you using on both?

From what it sounds like to me you are simply applying a micro-bevel when you move to your SM... nothing wrong w/ that, ppl do it all the time ;)

40 degree angle...on both the smith when I reprofile and the sharpmaker.....

Sounds like the Smith's system is likely applying an edge at something lower than the (assumed) 40° angle, resulting in a wider bevel. The SM's '40' setting is usually pretty close to being on-target (I've measured mine), but the difference in bevel widths and contact areas are suggesting (pretty much guaranteeing) that there's a mismatch between the two systems. Even so, as long as the narrower bevel applied by the SM is crisp, with a clean apex, it may not be too much of a problem, unless it's just not turning out as sharp as you'd prefer. As mentioned, effectively your finished edge has a 40° microbevel on it.

What Smith's system are you using, for reprofiling?

Blade> Bevel 30 > Micro Bevel 40. The micro bevel has to be a steeper angle than the bevel. Hope this helps.
