Sharpening Help??

I just got a Sharpmaker and really like it. Before that, I was freehanding on a bench stone and using a DMT (also used a magna guide).

Bottom line, there are LOTS of tools and tricks out there, but the BEST trick I've found to see what is going on as you work the edge is the sharpie trick Moose mentioned.

I also suggest you use a color that is going to stand out a bit - red, blue or green or something obvious - black on a black-coated blade may not be so apparent.

Edge pro apex ! I own a sharpmaker and its great . I still use it more then my edge pro (due to ease of assembaly and I never let my blades to get to dull now)but u cannot reprofile with it . Before anyone says it I bought the diamonds and no . Any angle you want ,starting with any dullness you have edge pro apex is the answer. I'm sure the wicked edge is great but I can't comment on that one cause I don't have one<the new me

]u just can't do that with a sharpmaker, believe me I tried. I got this knife on trade ,wanted to trade it back out . When I went to sharpen it on sharpmaker it just would not sharpen . Then it became a moral thing I busted out edge pro grinded back whole grind and presto.

I use a HF 1" X 30" belt sander with Lee Valley belts. First starting with around a 600 grit belt, (starting belt really depends on how dull the edge is), working down to a 9 micron belt, leather belt, then a leather hand strop. Process takes less then ten minutes, and you will have mirror polished, TP cutting sharp edge. Entire package cost me around $60.00.

I recently got a DMT alignment kit with a couple of extra diamond stones. It does a good job. It does what I expected it to do. The directions have helped me a bit! I've used it on several pocket knives and plan on hitting the kitchen and my fixed blades soon. I'd like to try a strop but haven't to this point.
