Ive been learning to sharpen on a waterstone and have been sharpening a FFG delica. What i cant figure out is if you are supposed to sharpen the whole flat grind on just sharpen a microbevel?

If i wanted more edge retention?

Lastly... can cheap waterstones suck to the point that i will have trouble sharpening them or is it just me?

Not sure what you mean by sharpen the whole flat grind but if you want more edge retention a micro bevel would help.

What kind of waterstone are you using?

Define "cheap". Inexpensive, or low quality? I have inexpensive waterstones that sharpen just fine, and I'm a sharpening noob.

And yes, I think you'll want a microbevel. Just go slow, cause a flat grind is fairly thin and shouldn't need much help to become ridiculously sharp.

I am using a woodstock steelex as my stone but then i switched to sand paper and a wooden block and i was able to sharpen the flat grind properly. Thank you for your input though
