Sharpening knives that were not asked to be sharpened.

There is a saying I read somewhere that applies. "A knife shouldn't be sharper than its user."

i gave up sharpening my ex-wives knives when i came home to see her chopping veggies on a concrete counter top.

When I got my wife her Shun set, I made her promise me to not use the glass cutting board, the counter top or a dish to cut things.

I used to keep our kitchen knives extremely sharp. One day my wife was preparing dinner, in her bare feet. She dropped the knife and jumped to get out of the way. Instead, the knife landed edge up and she came down on it with her big toe. It just "butterflied" it.

At the ER, the physician was amazed at what an excellent surgical cut this was. He said that it would heal perfectly. We then proceeded to get into a manly discussion on proper sharpening techniques. It was quite interesting until my wife broke the reveries to ask if anyone was going to sew her toe back together.

She is more careful today and she does appreciate how well a sharp knife works. She is an awesome cook as well. So good that she's been my wife for 40 years.

Keep the knives sharp all the time instead of letting them get dull, and she'll stop cutting herself. I've got dozens of beater knives I keep shaving+ sharp, and I can't recall when one of my kids cut themself on one. It's been enough years I forget. THEY have dull knives, but I don't. They're pretty good about telling their friends and guests 'DON'T use the knives' ... just don't. ;)

My favorite is when I hand one of my knives to a friend to check out and I say "careful, it's really sharp" First thing they do is decide they are going to check the edge with their thumb . I've had two people draw blood doing this, then act like it's my fault.

I don't touch the kitchen knives, I know my wife would cut her fingers off, she's not careful at all.

She's not careful because her knives are blunt. If she had razor sharp knives then she would quickly learn to be more careful (which is a good thing) maybe she would have to cut herself a couple of times, but she WOULD learn.

Blunt knives are dangerous because they make people complacent about knife handling.
