Sharpening: Lansky System or Spyderco Sharpmaker?

I have both. I use the Lansky for re-profiling and the Sharpmaker for maintenance. The Lansky does a better job dealing with badly worn knives. The Sharpmaker is much easier and quicker to use to touch up a slightly worn edge.

I'd agree with that Aligner suggested by knifenut. The Sharpmaker is the boss for maintenance ease, but if your edge takes damage (yes it can happen, even to a RAT) you'll want some diamonds on you.

Spyderco sharpmaker totaly changed my perspective on knife sharpening. It makes sharpening super easy, even to the n00b. I also learned how to sharpen free-hand, thanks to the SSM.

Sharpmaker for sure. The clamping process on the lansky can lead to uneven grinds on anything thick or long. Murdered an izula that way. It's hard to get a solid even bite on anything flat ground. Used a sharpmaker to get izzy back in shape. Works wonderfully for the rest of my knives. Fast, simple, works. Looking at getting a set of lansky benchstones, but really, the sharpmaker keeps everything working and sharp. So I'm not in any big rush.

Sharpmaker is the way to go for everyday sharpening touch ups, anything beyond that the old fashion way using a stone is the way to go.

sharpmaker .... lanksy kits annoy me atleast the ones i have gotten... the sharp maker is easy to use for daily touch up... and have a broad range of things you can sharpen , that and the dvd is acutaly pretty helpful..... if i wanna reprofile etc ... i got other tools for that.... but for the price i have to say the sharpsmaker is my daily driver i find myself behind it often well that and then stropping some times i use the strop more i guess...

I use a DMT Aligner for everything from reprofiling the bevel to quick touch ups. With the different stones available it can handle pretty much anything. I also strop afterwards just to give the edge a little extra fine polish - even though I have the extra extra fine stone and the knife is shaving sharp once I have finished on the aligner. I also take the aligner camping in case I want to fix up a blade out in the field - it isn't overly big or heavy and it is easy to use anywhere.

spyderco sharpmaker rocks. I have the diamond~, medium~, fine~ and ultrafine rods and this is a great set, always produces a great edge.

But there is something infinitely more rewarding when sharpening freehand :)

I'm creating a setup (finishing it the 5th) like nozh2002 (from this forum) see it here on youtube, which is basically a sharpmaker system with a normal stone (which has other advantages compared to the sharpmaker).

The sharpmaker of spyderco is basically just a stone that is fixated in a way you can always visually keep your angle correct. That's what nozh2002 system is also doing, but then in a horizontal fashion.

Sharpmaker can't really be beaten for maintenance once you get a knife set up like you want it. Unless you've convexed the edge, of course.
