Sharpening M2

I have a folder with a similar blade design to Rick Hinderer's X-18 Spanto only I had the maker use M2. I have had it for a while and am just now needing to touch it up. Any recommendations on how to get the most out of my time sharpening and touching this steel up? Thanks for any help offered.

if you had a set of paper wheels you can just use the buffing wheel to touch it up. its better than a leather strop too. if i need to touch one of my knives up i try the buffing wheel first. if the edge is too dull then i'll switch to the abrasive wheel to work up a burr then go to the buffing wheel.

I have sharpened HRC 65 M2 on regular oil stones without problem. Treat it like hard D2, S30V etc, it isn't too bad.

In my experience, it will support a fairly thin edge, I'd suggest 15 deg per side unless you plan to be rough with it. If you're using it as a precision cutter (like a skinning knife) you could go as low a 10.

I'm sure your maker would MUCH rather you send it to him. He'd more than likely do it for free, and avoid the chance for "OOPS I WISH I HADN'T DONE THAT" Have you contacted him? I don't know any maker that wouldn't be happy to resharpen one of his pieces free of charge.

He does have a lifetime free sharpening policy. I've been sharpening for over a year now and learned on a stone. I use DMTs but just never had to sharpen this particular blade. I read M2 is a pretty hard steel and didn't know if there was a secret to it.

I ended up with a wicked sharp edge after a few strokes on the DUO. I'm slowly building my skill and confidence with sharpening. I'm glad I made the effort to learn.
