Is there a "best"way to sharpen my new sirupati? Any preferred techniques or methods
that you guys use? I use a 204 and norton stones for all my other blades, will these work? Thanx.

Doc, we have some threads on sharpening here if you are willing to search for them. And, we have resident sharpening experts who will be to the rescue soon. Stay tuned.

There are quite a few sharpening receipies here. I have tried quite a few of them and they all work. The equipment is sufficient. If you can't find the threads request info again and a lot of people will jump in.

Doc, just about any stone or abrasive will work, some better than others. About the easiest way is to just grind a v-bevel along the edge of the convex grind. This can be done with little effort by hand with a small stone. Just work in sections keeping the angle constant and the stone perpendicular to the blade. Once finished use a milder abrasive like a loaded strop or a fine ceramic rod to work out the bevel just a little. This last step can also be used periodically to maintain your blade so it has to be taken back to the stone only rarely.

I got a shop 2 surupati. The blade was off center to the left.I`m lazy,(or value my time), and like to do three things at once. I put on a shop apron and turned on a movie. I started to sharpen this. After a while, I relized that I was wasting my time. There were flat spots on the edge that looked as though Cliff had been at it. I took it to the bench and applied a mill Bastard file with some viger.Moved the edge but, made a secondary bevel. I`ll clean it back to convex with a round axe stone at my leasure. It is sharp.

ghost - don't tell me you have invented a TV remote control device fixed with honing stone! HE...HE...HE

Who else but the ghost watches movies while sharpening a khukuri?

Pakcik Bill - you mention something that reminded me about my posting on a thread about the pix of a Gurkha sharpening his khukuri at Kosovo! HE...HE...HE

I read books during lectures. The Prof allways got his answers. They gave up trying to catch me not paying attention. I hand prime brass while watching a movie. It`s done by feel. Iprefer it to the loader, a 550B Dillion.

My Grandpa could not afford to lose steel. He pounded the edge of a syth with a hammer to realign the edge. Norskies are frugal.

I used to rate horror movies ( the good old classic Boris and Bela ones ) by counting the pieces and quality of armament next to the chair when the closing credits came up. No more.

Aha, the good old days back when we were single.

Aboard the Warrington there was a radioman who could copy FOX (as I recall the code name), read a book, smoke a cigar, drink coffee and carry on a conversation all at the same time. I often wondered how he could segregate his brain and operate on all these different channels simultaneously. I have a tough time operating on only a single channel.

You can`t even ask my computer guy a question when he is doing his thing. He loses all relevance.People are different.

Usually I start with the TV while sharpening knives and a beverage. In a few minutes the TV gets ignored, I forget about my thirst, and concentrate on the task at hand.

Stubby, my salyan, was starting to be in the need of an edge tune-up. An edge pro apex keeps all of my knives mirror razor sharp. Why not try to freshen up Stubby's with it also?
Starting with the course stone, and a bag of 9mm reloads and a sandbag to jig the handle, the process through the different stones only took about 15 minutes. I stopped with the 600 stone, then used the ceramic rod. Afterwards, Stubby can shave over most of the blade with ease

At about 320 grit, the edge gets smooth and the fine lines from the stones disappear. The edges on my smaller knives are polished up to 4000. They just gleam like a polished mirror.
Just for the fun of it, I may polish up Stubby's edge to this level.
Probably more functional just to stop at about 300. That is about what a Cold Steel trailmaster and my other large blades are finished off with.
Also used only one bevel. In the future may want to use a secondary, but too much work for now. Due to the thickness of the spine, I don't know what the actual angle is, probably only abut 21-22 degrees.
No movie or tv in the reloading room, but I have been known to listen to a Roy Orbison, Rick Nelson or other cd while sharpening or reloading. We must take little pleasures in life while we can.

I free hand this stuff. It`s not hard. It`s mors feel than sight. Why not do something else as well? I run my thumbnail over seated primers for flush. Not rocket science. I know that my reloads have flash holes. They worked once.
