Hey guys, I just got an M16-12LE, from CRKT. I love the knife so far, but I think it needs to be sharpened. How would I go about doing this and what tips can you recommend?

Thanks a lot. Oh by the way, here are some pictures.. sorry I was too lazy to retake them with the flash off when I realized what it made the knife look like. Ahh laziness.

I'd recommend that you look into getting a Spyderco Sharpmaker. It will do a nice job on your combo edge M16 and any other knife you have for that matter.

Thanks, I'll look into it.

EDIT: Question: which one should I get? I see Diamond, Fine, Medium, a set, and Ultra fine. Which one would you recommend?

Its a chisel grind - only sharpen the side that the grind is on, and then maybe touch up the non grind side lightly.

Get the Sharpmaker 204, current model in production. It comes complete with medium and fine stones, also instructional DVD. That's all you really need for sharp results.

One more thing before you buy the Sharpmaker - what the hell is up with your thumb

Just kidding, enjoy the knife.

lol you beat me to it :D

Was going to say if this is your first time sharpening a knife , a part serrated/tanto point/chiselground is going to be one grand adventure !

Welcome to BF.. ;)

It seems to me, from the pictures, that your thumb is "reverse-jointed". In other words it bends the opposite way than the joint..

Uh, my thumb certainly bends the right way... I've been told though that it bends a little bit past the norm though :o

"Cg's" are actually really easy to sharpen. Just raise a nice bur then do 2-3 light passes on the back side as close to flat-to-the-stone as you can.

yep, lots easier on a std benchstone imho.

the SM will work, but the angles are all wrong so ya have to hold the knife at a weird angle, the long way around the barn imho.

use a norton india stone to raise a burr and a gerber steel to strop the off side, or card board , or the stone, all will work.

a good tutorial for sharpening CG knives is www.emersonknives.com
