Sharpening my Rat RC 3 Mil

Thanks for all the help in this department, looks like I have some serious trail and error in this department. I know a lot of people call this a skill, rightfully so.

You are correct. It has some trial and error, but when you get it right it is SOOO rewarding! Just keep at it and remember: even people with years of experience also have some errors. It is like trying to lite a fire in the wilderness. Sometimes even the pro's struggle

Maybe I should but another factory 40* micro bevel on it. I meant 15* per side for 30* total on my Izula presently.

It's so darn sharp it will shave now but it wouldn't, out of the box with the presumed 40* edge. Am I compromising the edge durability at the more acute angle? I doubt it but I'm all ears. :)

To the OP: I have a Sharpmaker kit with diamond rods (no xxf rods yet) and a strop loaded with that green polishing compound.

I love to strop. It's a relaxing way to watch my wife's cooking shows with her and spend "quality time together"....."oh that looks good dear"....lol..looking at my edge under the lamp.

We've been together for 25 yrs so I'm allowed some latitude.
somone took theres down to 8* per side and siad they didnt have any problems.

I could put a pencil under the Sharpmaker and cut it down to about a 20* and then put a 30* micro-bevel. Then just strop it all the time in hopes of getting it convexed. Don't know if convexing would work out okay with that powdercoat though?

Going to get an old leather belt tomorrow at the Thrift store and build a strop, if I went to an auto parts store what should I ask for as far as compound?

Deerhunter2010,

I have no idea, but I'm sure someone will answer your question.

I got a beautiful strop for small fixed blades and folders here: http://www.knivesplus.com/KP-STROP8-STROPBLOCK.html

I've used it for a few months and it's still working great. I'd buy some of the Bark River green compound for stropping if I wanted to build my own.
