Sharpening on the go, best method?

Anyone have any thoughts on these?

Lansky Diamond Pads, (Extra Coarse, Coarse, Medium, Fine, Ultra Fine), 5 Pack

For $16.06 they seem as a good field sharpening system.

I just checked for the price locally in South Africa. Importing, shipping and courier works out at $36.86. Still one of the cheapest solutions. One medium rod of the Spyderco Sharpmaker is more then that locally.

Will be interesting when it arrives.

Marthinus, that's interesting! If I knew it's there, might have gotten it instead.

I tried to find out more about them, but I cant seem to find any form of review on them. I know they have a small surface area to work with, 1.875” x .75, but for a field sharpening system, many grits, good price it seems like a good idea. Will see when it arrives...probably only on the 15th of July.

I've pretty much narrowed it down to either the Spyderco Double Stuff or the DMT credit card sized 3 pack. Thoughts on these two vs. each other? Which leads to the final step, stropping? Recommendations for portable stropping? Same criteria, something I can have in my backpack whenever away from home. The stropping will be used much more than the sharpening on the go, as 95% of sharpening will be done at home.

Thanks,
Sauce

If you plan to use stropping more, any cardboard can be used with compound. Disposed as needed, very practical and cost only the compound.

I guess Spyderco doublestuff will give finer finish, being ceramic, but I don't have one, cannot do comparison. Perhaps checkout jdavis882 review on YT?

Cardboard and compound will certainly work. So will a wide leather belt. That's actually worked for me several times before I cut down the strop block to take with me. I wouldn't take the strop block backpacking, however, too heavy. I'd use my Doublestuff and bare leather belt.

For ultra light use, use the straps on your back pack, with or without any compound on them. Should work nearly as good as a steel does on kitchen knives. Just re-alines the edge and smooths it down. Denim (your jeans) or the nylon or canvas straps on your back pack will make an excellent strop. Along with your DMT cards, you should be good to go for most on the go needs.

Blessings,

Omar

I don't know if It's the best, but is how I do it.

Fallkniven DC4 and leather strop with flexcut gold compound
now I carry a piece of non-slip mat aprox. 2x5 inches too. It works perfect for placing the stone anywhere.

I'm starting to think that the people who post here are evil. I suddenly have a burning need for a field sharpening kit. :D

Easy call. Get the dmt diafold! I use it as my main sharpener at home, but it folds up tiny for travel too! It's not much larger than the credit card sized model, but much more practical. If you are traveling and only need to maintain your edge then the fine/ef is the call.

Peace
