I first started sharpening freehand using the micro-bevel method I picked up from The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening by John Juranitch. I found freehand sharpening with this method fairly fast and effective using Smith coarse and fine diamond stones. I recently purchased a DMT angle guide, and while I'm not sure it has made my knives sharper, it certainly improves my consistency. I would definitely suggest the aforementioned book to anyone wanting to pick up freehand sharpening, the author holds the world record for fastest shave with an ax...... nuff said. I may pick up a sharpmaker someday, as they seem to have a lot of support on here, and I can't find a good technique for sharpening recurve blades on a stone.

Thanks Richard. Good info. Advice is always welcome from someone who knows exponentially more than I.
