Sharpening problem

I've noticed that when I sharpen a knife with my Sharpmaker I get an uneven edge. It feels very sharp when I run my thumb across the edge in one direction, but not as sharp in the reverse direction. This is consistently true. I'm assuming that this is a technique snafu. Has anyone else had this happen or have any likely solutions? I thought I was duplicating the same stroke equally on each side, but perhaps I am not. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

donovan,
My guess, based on personal experience with the same problem, is that you're not holding the knife exactly vertical when you do one side. Perversely, it's likely the side that feels sharper.

Donovan - I agree with Dave. Perhaps if you keep your head about 18" back behind the tool when using it, might give you a more effective vantage point. usually when one is not holding the blade straight up and down it is because they are looking from "too close" and the left/right vantage point becomes distorted. Let us know how this works out.

donovan, I had the same trouble and discovered that I was using too much force and creating a bent wire edge. Felt sharp on one side only, but didn't last as a cutting edge. Try feeling with a fingernail at right angles to the edge (across, not along the edge) to see if it catches. It sould slide right off.

Thanks guys,

I spent yesterday sharpening every knife in several houses. There seems to be some truth in everyones observations. Sal's idea of keeping my vantage point farther back is helping to correct my technique and by the end of the day I was feeling better about things. Thanks for the replies.
