Sharpening Scissors

My wife had a pir of utility shears that she complained were getting dull. She was going to get rid of them and get a new pair. Just for the fun of it, I tried to sharpen them.

I took the halves apart and very carefully ground them using a 400 grit belt. I ground them down until the dulled, rounded edge was gone. After grinding, I deburred them on a piece of 400 grit sand paper placed on my work bench, much like deburring a wood worker's plane blade.

They seemed to work fine. The only complaint is that the first time she tried to curl ribbon, she put too much pressure on the ribbon and the ribbon snapped (no, she didn't cut her thumb :D ). The ribbon curls with less pressure against the blade now.

I'll try it again on the scissors that are relegated to kid use. I'll warn them that I sharpened them.
