Bricks are really good. If you have a brick around, you'll never have a dull knife. True.

If you want a knife sharpened hit up Richard J, he is the man! Never in my life have I seen knives so sharp as what ole Richard can do and it's not cosmetic his edges hold, and and what he charges and his turn around time he can't be beat. Yea he's a friend of mine but if you want a sharp knife, and a great knife discussion in the process hit up Richard J here on the forums. Gonna add Sharpening knives is his income , but he would rather teach someone to sharpen their own blades then to actually sharpen them how cool is that? A man that makes his income off sharpening willing to help other people learn to sharpen and take away from his income. Richard is to paper wheels what ben dale is to the edge pro and Clay dontknowhislastname is to the Wicked Edge, Granted he didn't invent the wheels, but he is the master of them. Not bashing the other guy by any means In the OP so don't take it that way...

Allen R took the words right outta my mouth!! Richard J is the BEST sharpener that I know!! The guy has been sharpening knives for decades and has sharpened everything from a Spydie Bug to large swords!! I trust him with all my expensive stuff as well! Hes done my Todd Begg stuff, Chris Reeves, Hinderer, Grayman, you name it he can do it!! I wouldnt't look anywhere else for a good sharpening! He was down and out for a bit there but hes back in action and im sure fully capable! He wouldn't send something out unless it were up to his strict standards!! Best of luck!!

Yea he'll be the only one I trust to sharpen my SMF(s) I don't feel comfortable sharpening it myself even on the edge pro.

+ 1 for Richard J.

Give him a call and like Allen said he'll do a great job on any of your blades for almsot nothing considering how low his prices are, and then will always be there to help you if you want it to learn how to do it yourself.

Best of luck!

Edit: I sent Richard a vintage Spyderco Pro-Grip once. I had pretty much given up on it as the serrations were shot. Richard did such a good job the only word to descried the work was amazing. Restored the edge and serrations without removing any metal. I only regret I didn't take some before and after pic's before I gifted the kinfe. I was blown away with his skill after I saw what he did with that blade... I honestly didn't think it was fixable.

If I remember correctly, Richard had to resharpen a Busse that had been "sharpened" by Siguy. My memory tells me that it had such an obtuse grind that it took a heck of a lot of work to grind it to a working edge.
It did have a pretty, polished "edge" though.

+ 1 for what the above have said about Richard J. He has so much experience on his paper wheels that is is like an artist using a brush. Those wheels are like an extension of his brain when he uses them. But even more important is the fact that you will never meet a more generous person. Give him a try and you will never regret it, and you will gain a good friend for life.

Blessings,

Omar

How is Richard J. with serrated blades? I have an E4 with full spyderedge that I cant get sharp no matter what I do.

See my post # 7.

It's Richards skill with serrated blades that really impressed me to begin with.

I had a vintage Spyderco Pro-Grip. I had the knife since the early to mid 1990's. From years of use and some abuse the serrations were shot and beyond my ability to sharpen or restore.

Richard did an amazing job on that blade. If you have serrations you need sharpened or just touched up Richard is the man. I can highly recommend.

He does a great job with them.

Here is a serrated blade that Richard sharpened for me. I wish I would have had a before picture, this blade wouldn't cut anything but now it will cut anything you throw at it. Cuts with ease! He sharpened this blade with a slotted wheel ONLY!!

Thanx Rich ;-)

Came to read about some sharpening skills but 4 posts in and it's all richardj...

I know, right? I mean, nothing against richardj (he does contribute a lot and its not really him), but the thread jacking gets old.

To keep on pace with the OP and to give some advice. I would invest in a decent fast cutting stone, like the norton economy, a sharpie, and some time. It will help get you going in the right direction. Once you have done some grinding, watch more youtube videos. You will have a much different understanding of what's going on in them now.

The secret that changed everything for me was making sure I worked up a burr along the entire egde before flipping the blade over. Its basic scarpening 101 stuff but its the single thing that makes all the difference. You can hit multiple angles but if you have a full burr on the whole edge you can get it sharp.
