I have some experience with freehand sharpening on Arkansas stones and DMT Diamond Hones. I also have a Lansky Sharpener and a Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker.
I really like the Sharpmaker. It is fast and simple to use. I can consistently put a shaving edge on any good quality knife (i.e. Buck) with it. The only drawback is that it only works at two different pre-set bevel angles. The new Buck knives have a bevel that fits well. If you have a knife with a different bevel you have to re-grind it to one of the fixed settings. That can take a while, and the stones that come with the Sharpmaker are not really coarse enough to do that efficiently. I use a corburundum stone and lean it against the sharpmaker stones for re-grinding.
