I have recently bought a 1200 grit eze lap 6 inch diamond stone but now need a honer in the field.but since the diamond is so fine im wonderi,g what to get. If i buy a 1000 grit smiths ceramic or arkansas stone will it polish the edge or will it just make it duller. I know i sound stupid right but ive just had good experiences with smiths stones so far and dont want to buy a spyderco stone or a fallkniven ceramic if i might get about the same result for less

For keeping a knife sharp in the field I would consider a two sided strop. Rough side loaded with compound and smooth side bare. Using both sides every day will
Maintain your edge in the field for quite a while without needing to resharpen.

I find stones small enough to pack in hard to use in the field, and I usually feel I do more harm than good on any blade larger than a Victorinox.

Just my experience.

I buy sections of ceramic rod on a large knife website and cut them into pocketable pieces on a tile saw, they work amazingly well and cost about $2 for a 8.5" chunk, my SAK I carried and used every day for 9 months (and I actually use my knife all day at work), I run it across one of those when I feel I need a touch up, a few strokes each side and I'm shaving arm hair.
We use the same thing to keep our shop knives sharp at work, that cut foam all day (which surprisingly dulls knives quickly), we have knives that have been in use 5+ years and are razor sharp.

I keep one in my glove box and one in my hiking bag, I've used them for touching up the edge on my axes, knives and machetes in the field while camping, I swear by those cheap little ceramic rods.
