Sharpening? stones, diamonds or sand what do you guys perfer?

I tried nearly every stone/system on the market. I finally found Razor Edge Systems stones and used them for over 20 years. About 4 years ago I came across the Sharp Shop Machine. Basically it's a 1x30 horizontal belt sander. I use a 120 grit to set the bevel then a 600 for a few passes and finally a felt belt with rouge to put the finishing touches on the blade. It's quick and very effective. It uses a Lansky type knife holder so your angle is constant.

I use stones in convexing. BMK is technically right about the tangent thing but it is on such a minute scale that it is insignificant. And I have to disagree with the "unnecessary removal of material" because if done properly the same amount of material is removed. I stopped using soft backings 3yrs ago and my convex are better for it.

Page has me sold on those DMT's, though. My only concern are the rough grit plates. I have a set of DMT Diafolds for the field and the Extra Rough lost most of it's abrasive during the first use. The rest are good(C, F, XF, XXF).
