My Mother my grandmother and my wife's grandmother all use this "system" and they always have razor sharp knives. Why can't I do this with one. I think it's a little unfair that they can acheive razor edges with a sharpener that cost a dollar and I use a system tht cost 100 times that to get the same effect. What's the trick? Does the Lansky or Sharpmaker fairy come down in the middle of the night and sharpen their knives? I'm just curious how this thing works.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

I think you are right about the Lansky and Sharpmaker coming down in the middle of the night.

I hate those stupid wheel things.

The other thing that really helps out the little wheel thingie is the fact that most kitchen knives are made from pretty thin blade stock, and are fairly soft steel.
