sharpening system superiority

Thanks for all the comments. Seems I am hearing that a Edge Pro can be beat but it is the best system....true?

John

For me, that's absolutely true. I can get edges on my EP that are really, really scary, and mirror polished. I also go slow and pay attention. My EP also taught me a lot about edges and finishes that has improved my hand sharpening immensely.

When I have some time in the evening, however, there's nothing like a Norton India coarse/fine, a good beer, and the smell of turpentine. :D:thumbup:

I don't think there is a superior system, they all still depend on the user to do something right, and they all have drawbacks. I like freehanding because there is no 'system', just something to abrade steel and hopefully doing it at a fairly consistent angle.

I think the best system is like the best knife...there is not one. Many will agree that one system or another works very well (most do), but I doubt we will all ever agree that one is better than all others.

Personally, I can not even agree that one is best. It depends on my mood, the steel, the knife, and the desired results.

Use what you like and try not to be resistant to consider other options...sometimes you will get surprised. Just as there are fan-boys for knife brands/makers, there are fan-boys for sharpening methods. Objectivity is usually a good thing.
