A large knife more substantial?
In what way.
A machete outchops a large knife by far..More length(more impact) and not heavier due to thin blade.
Little chance of breaking.
Machete , short fixed blade I see as a better option.
Or short fixed blade /axe combo.

Are you going to chop branches that are in the way with a large Bowie instead or is a machete a better choice for that.
Are you going to chop thick branches or trees with a large knife when an axe does much better..

Everybody's got to take with him what he thinks is best suited for him.
I just can't see the large knife the best choice.

Find a spot and squat you say.
What is it where you sleep in..
What do you need to build that you need the big knife for over the machete or axe.

I strongly feel that quite a few people(not directed at you,just a general statement) seem to have an excuse so they can take their favorite toys/knives with them.
Nothing wrong with having a preference, but is that really the best choice, or even needed..
