Sharpening Traditional Folders

Chris and David, thanks to you both for the additional info.

Chris, you mention the EEF, but I don't see a DMT EEF in the credit card hones. Am I missing it or are you referring to a different DMT hone?

David, I think you've touted that Ryobi white compound before, but do I recall correctly that it's no longer made, or at least in the same formulation you have?

I have no freehand skills, but you guys have got me wanting to give the DMT credit card hones a try, especially since they are so economical. You can get a 3-pack of the coarse, fine, and extra-fine for around $28 shipped. I know you said the coarse isn't much needed, but with the package being only a bit more than the fine and extra-fine alone, I'm inclined to get all 3.

Sorry, I didn't clarify. The EEF I have is a small (4x1?) interrupted DMT, not the credit card. However, because of the size, I carry them all (3 cards, 1 stick).

I bought the 3 cards in a pack too. Good price.

Thanks, Chris. Yes, now I see that EEF 4" interrupted model. May have to hold off on that one as it's a bit pricier.

Before a generous member sent me that ;), I was using only the 3 from the set and added 1k & 1.5k sandpaper in the routine before going to strops. Still a nice setup.

Ryobi has changed their packaging (at least) in the few years since I bought that white rouge compound. One thing that's obviously different, is that their current packaging/labelling doesn't include the grit size info, as was included on the tubes of 'White Rouge' (2-5µ) and 'Emery' (black; 1-3µ) I picked up. I don't know if they still utilize the same white rouge compound in any of their current offerings. With the black Emery, it's been pointed out (by HeavyHanded) that their current 'black' version seems to be coarser. It may be worth trying out what they're marketing now; I still may do this myself, to see how it compares to what I've got. I bought mine at Home Depot, and HD still carries the Ryobi brand (I've seen them list it online, anyway).

Regarding the DMT credit card hones, I never picked up one in Coarse; mainly, that's only because when I picked up my Fine & EF, the store didn't have one of the Coarse at the time. If I do happen to conveniently stumble across it, I'll likely buy one. But, I haven't seen as much need to go out of my way to find it or order one. I do have a Coarse/XC 6" double-sided Dia-Sharp hone, and have occasionally used the Coarse side on that one. Don't think I've ever used the XC yet, except perhaps to experiment and get a feel for it.
