heyz folks,
I recently bought an Al Mar knife, and I am kinda curious, how do you folks sharpen your knives without leaving any sharpening marks?
Thanks in Advance!!

It is nearly impossible for the normal knife enthusiast to not leave sharpening marks. That is, with out the use of high speed buffers that are present in the factory setting.

This works best for me. I use a sharpmaker, medium grit and fine grit, or any combination of the two depending on how dull the edge is. I then follow up with Veritas honing compound, available at Lee Valley on the web, on a leather strop. The compound is .5 microns grit wise and leaves a mirror polish on the edge. Too much stropping can round off the edge and you'll be at square one. With some practice, you'll be a pro.

get a cheapo pos and practice on that first.

of course have fun making it dull first. free hand stone sharpening takes alot of practice.

good luck

I agree with Wire Edge. Be careful when you strop so you don't round off the edge. If you use common sharpeners, you will get scratches on the edge, unless you use a buffer. If this is your first time sharpening, practice on cheap knives so you get accustomed to it before you sharpen your expensive knives.

If you are new to sharpening apply masking tape to the side of the blade when you sharpen. Cover the entire bevel except for about a 3/16-inch clear strip by the edge. A v-style ceramic rod sharpener like a Sharpmaker is pretty reliable as well.

hey folks, thanks for all the replies...I guess I would give all your suggestions a try, especially raptor's...just gotta start learning how to sharpen so that i can sharpen my Al Mars, as i don't like those sharpening marks....darn...;)
thanks anyway folks!
