I have an RC-3 & 3 Izulas and lot's of other steels. I never got one anywhere near factory sharp until I ditched my Sharpmaker (every rod available for it as well) and went freehand on DMT Diafolds.
They're awesome!! Now any knife I sharpen is sharper than from the factory and I never got a Magna Guide. Just holding the same angle for 6 - 8 light passes per side (check that you're hitting them close to even - might need an extra swipe here and there - you'll be able to tell).
I have x-coarse, coarse, fine, x-fine, xx-fine grits, all in three handly little fold-ups. PLUS a few good strops. I can finally shave the hair on my arm - after 9 months of screwing around with a Sharpmaker and their 2 angle pre-sets.
Freehand is simple, just take it slow to start with and use a beater knife for your 1st couple of jobs. I have 2 beaters and they're like razors - no scratches anywhere - just taking my time. LOVE DMT!
