...I have a ZT folder in M4 that the strop won't touch. I think the setup I am going with is the KME diamond hone kit + a kangaroo strop with 4 micron CBN and the convex rod. Should pretty well cover the bases for me with that setup.
I was experiencing similar frustration with the Bark River compounds and a few of my knives with "super steels." I got a couple of the cheap paddle straps from DLT or KSF, and loaded them up with the 16 and 8 µm CBN compound. I have been very very happy with the results. By using the larger micron compound, I am able to both maintain the edge on my knives and not lose any of the toothiness that I prefer on my edges.
Most of the time I'm just stropping as I don't really let the knives get dull. If I need something more aggressive I use 1000 grit sandpaper on the strop. This seems to work well with the tool steel used on Andy's knives. I also have a couple of folders that use a "super steel" and on those I prefer a stone instead of sandpaper.
Not to argue with anyone here. Personally, I find stropping superfluous unless the blade is adequately thin. Overstropping an obtuse edge can round it out over time. Potentially more useful than a strop is a simple ceramic rod. The two together are great at maintenance but poor at steel removal. Unless you start stropping on 100 to 200 grit sandpaper the efficiency is questionable on a thicker edge imho.
