sharpening your knife in the wild

I still don't understand the mechanics of stropping or sharpening...I'm looking for an idiot proof way to keep my blade sharp...without damaging it..preferably portable

A while back my wife brought home a bag of "rocks" from the local hobby store because she knew I was picking up smooth pieces of quartz to use for sharpening stones. She got them on sale for a buck. They were basically polished river rock about 1-1/2 inches across.

They work great for re-aligning the edge - not great if the knife is really dull -but great if you just want to touch up the edge. I use them by carefully running the stone alone the edge with the back of the blade resting on my knee. Works great.

Any really hard rock will work for this.
