Sharpening ZDP189...

Thinking about getting a ZDP189 Delica, but have heard comments that it's hardness makes it awkward to sharpen.

Is a Sharpmaker capable of creating a factory edge (or better) on such a blade?

Or would i need to look into other methods?

Thanks

Sal said at first he was sharpening his at 30 degrees, presumably on a Sharpmaker. He has since said he has it down to 15 degrees inclusive (about where I have mine ;) )

The stones/rods of the Sharpmaker are much harder than the hardest steel. The difficult part is the ZDP seems to be pretty abrasion resistant, so it will take a bit longer to get the job done. Not being terribly patient, I use DMT diamond hones for my sharpening.

I have my Jess Horn right around 15 degrees inclusive now (sharpened flat to the stone), and sharpening in near instant with a 15 degree microbevel (30 inclusive). At first I used the sharpmaker diamond hones for the reprofiling, then bought a DMT x coarse, and it works much better at reprofiling. Edge retention is up, as well as cutting ability with the much thinner angle.

I bought the delica in the zdp and the diamond spyderhones came in very handy and it still took some time

Sharpmaker stones has very delicate abrasive, so it need time to take of material even it it soft steel. To reprofile KaBar 12C27 Sandvic edge on smaller angle it toke me several days with diamond rods. It does not really matter is it ZDP189 or AUS-8 or 52100 or something. It can not bite out more then it's tooth capable of.

Personaly I see only one case when Sharpmaker fail - CPM S90V with vanadium carbides 2 micron size - Fine rode does not make any difference after medium rods, because vanadium carbides harder then Aluminium oxides and so it was wise versa - CPM S90V who sharpen Sharpmaker.

ZDP-189 did not make any difference. I sharpen it same as I sharpen everthing else, I did not notice any difference in sharpening time or effort.

Callipso Jr. is exteremely sharp! I never see anything as Callipso Jr. out of the box, I am not sure that it will be possible for me to make it so sharp myself. I am wondering how it was sharpen to this level in first place.

Thanks, Vassili.

i think it's comparable to BG-42

if it gets really dull, use freehand on a coarse stone first, and then switch over to the fine sharpmaker-rods. should be OK
