Sharpening

Have you tried marking the blade with a sharpie? It will help you see what is actually contacting the sandpaper. A tip I got from Lennox that I found useful was to mark the edge with several lines perpendicular to the edge instead of just coloring the whole edge.

This is one of the most important tips for a newbie, or even old oldie. By 'painting' the entire edge with a black marker, then making a few passes on your sharpening device, you can then examine the edge (a loupe or maginfier of some sort is helpful) to see where exactly you are removing the metal. Adjust your angle accordingly. Many Busse blades come from the factory with a rather steep edge grind, so you will probably have to raise up the back of the blade to hit the mousepad at a steeper angle to work the actual edge. If you intend to change the edge angle and make it shallower, say, 20* per side instead of 30*, then 2000 grit is way too fine.

IMHO, a mousepad is too soft of a base. Unless you use very light down pressure, the blade is going to sink into the pad, the paper will 'wrap' around the edge, and it will just dull the edge. Use a firmer base, such as a piece of leather, or even a thick magazine or catalog.

INFI is not a supersteel that is hard to sharpen. Go over to the Maintenance subforum, there are about a million threads on diffwerent sharpening techniques.

I did the sharpie thing and I'm removing metal from the right spot, so my angle is good.

I spent more time on the strop this time (though I do have an issue with applying the green compound on the leather - it's so hard!) and the edge got a little better. But still not razor sharp as I can get on my Spyderco Dragonfly or my sissipuukko (both with V saber grinds).

So, should I just spend more time on the strop?

If I can be of any assistance let me know. If you would like we will resharpen any of our knives for just the cost of the return shipping.

Thank you for this. It's comforting to know I have someone to "fix" my knife if I somehow do something stupid.

I'm trying to learn how to sharpen it. It's my first convex edge and for now it's a little challenging.

It might have been said before but I find a mouse pad too soft. I use sandpaper on leather with very little pressure. It takes a while but I have gotten good results. If you doubt your angle I second the sharpie technique.
And of course we need pics.

Not sure how well received this is but I use a Worksharp which puts a convex edge on.

I only use it on my "cheaper" blades. Otherwise I would recommend sending it to Busse or a reputable sharpener to have it done correctly.

Pictures, of course.

EDC for the office and EDC for the weekend. You guys can see I gravitate towards small knives.

Just keep practicing. You will get it.
