I have an old CS hawk with very used/dull edge.I 've tried to use a file but to no avail. What would be the best way to bring the edge back?(No access to a grinder). Thanks

Stay away from the grinder. Maybe I should say: keep the grinder away from the cutting edge of your tool. Get some automotive sand paper and a flat, straight piece of lumber and strop on that. If your blade is really AFU, start with 180-200 grit and strop away from the edge to remove any chips and re-profile. I clean my hatchets up with 400 to 600 and polish with 1000 grit. 1000 works on my skinning knives (but I use the paper on a leather strop). If you want to see yourself in the edge, go to 2000/2500 grit.

Not sure what to tell you about a file, I LIKE to use a file on my axes and hatchets. Just got to the angle right. Then finish up on stones. How are you holding them down?
